The 2016 Annual Kids Safety Fair was held on Tuesday, May 10 at the Eastman Toy F. Reid Employee Center in Kingsport. The 2017 event will be held on Tuesday, May 9.
The Kid's Safety Fair was started in 1995 by the Contractor Safety Partnership at Eastman as a way to introduce safety to school age children. The concept was the idea of Tony Taylor, the safety manager at American Mechanical at the time. Unfortunately, Tony passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. In honor of his efforts, the Tony Taylor Award is presented at the Kid's Safety Fair each year to an employee of one of the Contractor Safety Partnership companies to recognize that person's meritorious efforts to advance safety in the workplace.
This event is attended by several hundred fourth grade students from area elementary schools. For the last several years, food and drinks for the children, teachers and workers has been provided by Hardee's. Eastman Chemical Company has hosted the Kid's Safety Fair at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center every year since 1996. Donations from the various partnership companies, the Kingsport Area Safety Council and area businesses provide treat bags for the children and gift certificates for school supplies for the teachers.
In addition to our financial contribution, the Kingsport Area Safety Council provides a special photo booth. Each attendee is given the opportunity to don fire protection helments and have their photo taken with their class mates. As part of the backdrop, we provide a safety message that promotes fire prevention. Special thanks to Holston Army Ammunition Plant, BAE Systems, Inc., Centerra Fire Services, and Eastman for making this activity a huge success.
